Durianated!

"Taste like heaven, smell like hell"

Name:
Bombaceae Durio zibethinus L./Murr

(The family Bombacaceae is best known for showy flowers and woody or thin-shelled pods filled with small seeds and silky or cottonlike fiber. The durian, Durio zibethinus L., is one member that differs radically in having large seeds surrounded by fleshy arils.)

Better known as:
Durian (Malaysia/Worldwide), Duren (Indonesia),
Thurian (Thailand) Alert! ALERT! We now have: FAKE DURIAN!

(Apart from variants of the word "durian" in native dialects, there are few other vernacular names, though the notorious odor has given rise to the unflattering terms, "civet cat tree", and "civet fruit" in India and "stinkvrucht " in Dutch. Nevertheless the durian is the most important native fruit of southeastern Asia and neighboring islands.)

From:
South East Asia (Malaysia/Thailand/Indonesia, etc.)

The possibilty is there, thanks to genetic enginerring. But I don't think it has been ventured into yet.

Well, then the issue of ethics come into place. Islam allows genetic engineering if something good comes out of it, i.e. beneficial to humans, not for mere pleasure. For instance, you can't just cross a cat with a monkey to see the result. Unless if you strongly believe that there's some advantages by doing so. In your example of durians tasting like bananas, if it's just for the taste and not for any added nutritional value, there's pretty much no purpose in doing that. Unless, you want to incorporate some added nutrition into the durian which is only available in bananas, and by doing so the taste of bananas 'tag' along, then I suppose it's ok. :)

Right guys?

@ati: Sorry about that. Cat just came into my mind.

@fauzan: Tapi dpt B+ jugak. v_v

@maman: Yes, same thing with cloning. If it is ethical and has some benefits, then it's allowed. But at the moment, when it comes human cloning, it has been prohibited. It's pretty much the same basis with all science related stuff: all based on ethics and the benefits of it. :)
