My 1st Day Experience

This is what I learned from my 1st day at work:
  • How to calculate sucrose level in food sample in Brix
  • How to calculate viscosity in Bostwick using the Bostwick meter
  • How to calculate acidity of a food sample with phenolphthalene and sodium hydroxide
  • How to measure salt in food using silver nitrate and potassium chromate
  • How to calculate pH using pH meter
Oh yeah, did I mention that their lab's like a kitchen? I shall never ever complain about UIA again. And the hostel as well. Never ever!

Salaam sis arshana, it seems that someone's already getting her hands dirty with food!

I understand that you are in F.Biotech concentration, yes? What areas do you concentrate on based on your biotechnology skills as you get involved with the food industry at Campbell's?

I'm just curious since a lot of people here in the University keep asking me about the innovative means biotechnology has to offer with respect to food--well i wished i could tell them that i'm more interested in environmental management but then, it's good to think about using microbes and defending GM crops..

Hey, you found our little blog. :)

To be honest, I haven't been doing anything related to Biotech at all at Campbell's. I'm not sure if they grasp the concept of internship, cause the only thing they have been asking me to do is filing and making databases for them.

But there are a few tests that they do there. Like the one's I mentioned in the post above. That's to test the shelf life of the finished products. They conduct microbiology tests as well to check on the microbes in their food products.

I'm not involved in any of their tests though. I only get to observe. From a distance at times.

Some of the tests are conducted externally, such as the nutritional analysis for each food product.

Other than that, there's nothing much. They're more on GMP, HACCP, OSH, etc, which is pretty boring actually. That's the stuff you learn in Halal & Haram class with Dr. Othman. Bleah.

Maybe you should ask the others, cause I believe they're doing much more interesting stuff that's more related to Biotech and/or F. Biotech.

You're back in M'sia?
