Re-examining Biotechnology

Since Lutfi has called forth entries that are more scientific to reflect our status, here is a few;

1

We had a group discussion on effects of biotechnology on diversity last week, upon discussion with others one conclusion strucked my mind - it's all started from one reason; to satisfy our needs.

To think of it, biotechnology is initially developed because we need more foods, we need cleaner environment, and we need a better life. It's never about to serve others, but to serve our own selves. In fact, the definition of biotechnology itself; "the application of technology on organisms for the benefit of human."

Oh, how it sounds self-centered.

Then again, in view of the fact that we are learning, in a larger picture, for our own benefit - it also means we are learning to give service to others too, our fellow human. The justification, is somewhat reassuring.

2

Why there are so many skeptical response accompanying the advance of biotechnology - I wonder?

If we are feared to cause disruption to the systems of earth - what then were we doing all these millions years developing countries and exploring natural resources?

If so, we might as well do nothing and sit tight.

Or rather maybe, being a biotechnology student makes all those 'supposedly exciting cum controversial' issues of GMOs and whatnots are not more than just rhetorical exploitations of certain parties to another.

End of somewhat scientific issues. :)

No matter how u think of it, biotechnology is for human. Actually it's not just biotech, but it's everything, anything we do. All for us human. If not for our use, at least for our satisfaction. Saving a cat stuck on a tree, is it for the cat, or for our own satisfaction, or a bit of both? Haha. Do I sound like Dr. Adi?

Nak komen semlm tp tak sempat.

For me, biotech is done for the entire human population. For example, GM food. Bila scientist buat research & berjaya, takde la dia sorang je dok makan hasil kerja dia tu. He does it for the benefit for the entire humankind.

I think it's quite impossible to be selfish when it comes to biotech, unless it's the awards, money and recognition that you might get out of it.

@Hajar: Murninya cita2 awak tu. Nnt jgn jadi mcm saintis Korea tu yg konon2 berjaya clone tp sebenarnya dia fabricate result. Ethics tu. Dr Adi mesti mengamuk. Hahahaha.

Lutfi,

I guess you are right, no justification would be enough - we're indeed working but for ourselves.

Mind is so tricky sometimes.

Fauzan,

Even so you succeed in cloning her, would it be worth it to just have her body but not her heart?

Arshana,

I think you're right too. So far being in this course made me feel like I have a purpose. At least, for now.

maman san, tq for stopping by and give a comment. However, I can't help it but to disagree with what u said. You're just blaming the technology, the advancement, the environment. Those things are not the ones at fault. It's us, human. Some of us human don't know how to manage the advancements. Why? I think coz they are only chasing the tangibles, and neglect the intangibles. Some of us human are rottening to the core.

Please, don't blame something that has no 'aql, no brain to think. The only one to be blamed is us human. We are the khalifah. If everyone is like ur friend, doesn't care bout the world, do u think this blog will exist? No. And the young executive, he's not the victim of those things u said. He's a victim of his own pity self, stuck in the rate race. Wanna blame others for that? So unfair.

Hayya 'ala al-falah. Allah suruh, marilah menuju kejayaan. Tapi sebelum tu, Hayya 'ala as-Sholat. Solat. So kena balance la dunia akhirat. Kemajuan/kejayaan kena diiringi dgn iman. If not, heh, there goes the world we live. valueless.

People tend to make mistakes. Sengaja atau tak. Kita cuba jadi sempurna, but the journey is long and tough, mistakes occur. We have to fix it. Kesilapan yg dibuat dgn teknologi, teknikalnya dibaiki dgn teknologi. Yang pentingnya, akal di mana? hati di mana? Jangan salahkan keadaan, jangan salahkan orang lain.

Wallahu ta'ala a'lam

The way I see it, instead of blaming people and/or computer, it's about time someone did something about it instead of just complaining. It might not work out. At least at the end of the day, you'll know you did try to do something to make it better. That's all that matters. :)

haha...ingat word document ke nak undo2. Now, it's time to fix what's broken and to prevent it from happening again. We biotechnologist will try our best to do our part, and if possible other part as well!

maman-san, try to attain financial freedom. Then you don't have to do what you don't like anymore.

People learn from mistakes. If there's no mistakes, then there's nothing to be undone, hence, nothing to be learnt.

True, no?

I'd kill the poor sob too. haha..Skrg cakap camtu la. Ntah la. Nauzubillah. Well, even though we dont learn from our mistakes, somebody would learn from those mitakes.

Bush...hmm...what makes me think that the jews are behind it...or maybe it's just pure stupidity.
